Original score by Michael “CAVS” Cavanagh (King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard)

Before the billion-dollar blockbusters. Before Batman. Before Oppenheimer. Memento was the film that introduced Christopher Nolan to the world.

26 years ago, Nolan released his second feature film, Memento. This independent thriller quickly became a cultural phenomenon, earning Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Memento introduced the world to Nolan’s narrative puzzles, fractured timelines and obsessive attention to detail that would come to define his work.

Michael “CAVS” Cavanagh of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard reimagines the film with an all-new live score, performing solo across multiple drum kits and a suite of electronic instruments. Technical and bombastic, Cavanagh’s performance will mirror the intensity and precision at the heart of Nolan's most audacious work.

Part film screening, part live concert, Hear My Eyes has spent over a decade creating immersive cinema experiences, building a loyal following through collaborations including Terminator 2: Judgment Day with Peter Van Hoesen and Robin Fox, Chopper with Springtime and Mick Harvey, Hellraiser with Hieroglyphic Being and Pan's Labyrinth with Sleep D.

For Nolan devotees, King Gizzard fans and anyone who loves cinema that takes risks, revisit the cult classic that launched one of modern cinema's most celebrated directors.

  • Is the Hear My Eyes score performed entirely live, or are elements of the original score retained?
It's entirely live, and entirely new. None of the film's original score is retained. Instead, a brand-new score is composed especially for this film, written over many months and rehearsed meticulously for these specific performances. From start to finish, everything you hear is happening in real time, right in front of you. You have to be in the room to truly experience it.

Is the re-imagined score endorsed by the film's rights holders?
Yes. Every Hear My Eyes production is fully endorsed by the film's rights holders, so you can settle in knowing this reinterpretation has their blessing.

Will I still hear the dialogue?
You will. All of the film's original dialogue, foley and sound effects are kept exactly as you remember them, woven right into the experience. The only element we've lifted out is the film's original score, making room for the live performance to take its place.

Which version of Memento will be screened?
The one and only, Christopher Nolan's original, mind-bending cut, exactly as it was released to cinemas. No alternate edits, just the film in all its backwards-unfolding glory.

Will Michael “Cavs” Cavanagh be visible to the audience?
Yes. Michael will share the stage with the film, in full view throughout the night, so you can watch every beat and every sound being made as the story unfolds.

  • "Once again, Hear My Eyes have brought together a perfect match of visuals and music to create a rocking night of entertainment." Beat

“Their performance is appropriately restrained; they know exactly when to let the film breathe and tell its own story. They consistently pick the right time to jump in with their thrilling synthetic beats, enhancing an action sequence and contributing a subtle low drone to punctuate tense dialogue.” The Scoop

“City Recital Hall’s excellent sound system handled everything the MESS performers – Mat Watson, Kat Stathis, Rachael Kim, Madeleine Davey and Gus Franklin, arranged along a “liquid metal” desk beneath the screen – could throw at it.” Limelight.

"What makes the concept so effective is the artistic balance between screen and performance. The score and lighting never compete with the film, instead they respond to it, enhancing its rhythm, tension and scale." My Melbourne Arts
