Celebrate an extraordinary musical tribute marking the 100th anniversary of Mimis Plessas, one of Greece’s most revered and influential composers. From his early years as a prodigious piano soloist to his legacy as a national icon with music composed for 104 films, Plessas’ timeless melodies — such as Pios to xerei and Tosa Kalokeria — are deeply woven into the fabric of Greek cultural identity.
This landmark performance stars the exceptional Dimitris Basis, whose powerful voice and platinum-selling career have established him as a global ambassador of Greek music. He is joined by acclaimed Australian conductor George Ellis, internationally renowned for leading the Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony and celebrated for his ability to fuse symphonic mastery with contemporary expression. Also featured is Maria Yiakoulis, a classically trained flautist and vocalist whose distinctive blend of Australian jazz influences and traditional Greek modes brings an intimate and soulful Mediterranean dimension to the evening.
Accompanied by a full Symphony Orchestra and traditional Greek instruments, this remarkable ensemble will take audiences on a magical journey through a century of Plessas’ musical genius. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of City Recital Hall, this is a rare and unforgettable opportunity to honour a legend beneath A Sky with Stars.
