Having toured the world with her band on the unstoppable tide of her universally acclaimed album Crushing, Julia Jacklin now steps forward in all her power for a major solo performance as part of City Recital Hall’s Singular Voices series.

With her trademark bravery and breathtaking intensity, Jacklin will share new and old songs, closing the distance between herself and the audience with nothing more than the power and authenticity of her soulful voice.

Her masterwork to date, Crushing, embodied all meanings of its title with 10 tracks born from feelings of heartbreak, infatuation and loss. The follow-up to her 2016 debut Don’t Let the Kids Win, Crushing was the breakthrough record of 2019 -- nominated for six ARIA Awards, shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize, and topping many year-end lists, with abundant critical praise from Pitchfork, NME, The Guardian, MOJO and NPR.

Jacklin has since released several stand-alone songs, to the joy of her legion of fans, most recently the drolly-titled ‘to Perth, before the border closes’. The captivating strength of Jacklin’s lyrics, with their uncompromising specificity and infinitely surprising turns of phrase, continue to bear witness to her artistic ingenuity.

7.30pm: Maple Glider
8.30pm: Julia Jacklin

Supporting Julia Jacklin is Maple Glider (Melbourne’s Tori Zietsch) who has burst onto the music scene with her acclaimed debut, To Enjoy is the Only Thing. Tracing a map of departures - a relationship breakdown, a band breakup, leaving behind a religious upbringing, the loneliness of solo travel - Maple Glider’s hypnotic indie-pop songs resonate with emotion and wisdom.

Bold songwriters. Sublime acoustics. Enthralling solo concerts. Singular Voices at City Recital Hall invites contemporary artists of the highest calibre to step forth on one of the most visually and sonically beautiful stages in Australia, dissolving the boundary between listener and song with only the barest embellishment to their exceptional voices.
