In nearly eight years Acacia Quartet has won great respect for their versatile and inventive programs which couple established repertoire with the unorthodox.
Acacia has recorded six albums – three of which earned nominations for an ARIA Award for ‘Best Classical Album’ and an APRA-AMCOS Art Music ‘Award for Excellence’. Their CD recordings ‘Blue Silence’, the complete works for string quartet by Elena Kats-Chernin, and ‘An AIDS Activist’s Memoir in Music’, by Lyle Chan, have both received ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Limelight Magazine.
Acacia is passionate about supporting Australian composers, working with young musicians and sharing their love of music with audiences of all ages. Their performances feature regularly on ABC Classic FM, Fine Music 102.5 and Qantas In-flight Entertainment. Acacia’s most recent recording ‘I Was Flying’ with ARIA award-winning pianist and composer Sally Whitwell for ABC Classics reached number 2 on the Classical iTunes Top 100 Chart and became an ARIA finalist in 2015.
Alicia Crossley is one of Australia’s leading recorder players. She performs a wide variety of repertoire from renaissance dance tunes to contemporary electro-acoustic works with a particular interest in bass recorder repertoire.
An experienced recorder player, Alicia regularly performs throughout Australia and has toured in the USA and New Zealand. She has also presented works at a number of festivals and conferences. Alicia is a passionate supporter of contemporary Australian recorder repertoire and has collaborated with a number of Australian composers, premiering works by Julian Day, Daniel Rojas, Damian Barbeler, Stephen Yates, Paul Cutlan, Elias Constantopedos, Hayden Woolf, Tristan Coelho, Mark Oliveiro, Andrew Batt-Rawden, Chris Williams, Paul Castles and Alex Pozniak.
Matt Withers is an ambassador for Australian music, a well-established classical guitar pedagogue, performer and role model for musicians across the country. Matt has a strong history of performing, recording and commissioning Australian works from distinguished composers as well as from generational peers. With solo and chamber studio albums released on ABC Classics (Australia) and Soundset Recordings (USA), he thrives on taking this music to wider audiences, broadening and expanding their musical horizons.
He is a mentor for young, emerging guitarists and musicians as shown through his role as Patron for the Senior Ensemble of SAYGE – the South Australian Youth Guitar Ensemble. Matt is regularly invited to present masterclasses for tertiary students around Australia and internationally having mentored in Canberra, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, the Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music (Wellington) and across Europe at institutions in France and Sweden.
