Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva makes her Australian debut with passionate music by Chopin and Liszt.
Yulianna Avdeeva made her name when she won the 2010 Warsaw Chopin Competition. She’s since emerged as a foremost interpreter of Chopin, bringing out the strength as well as the refinement of his music. This recital embraces every side of Chopin, from the dreamy filigree of his nocturnes and the drama of his fantasies and ballades to the irresistible dance rhythms of his mazurkas and the heroic spirit of his Op.53 polonaise. Then she turns to Liszt, a composer she regards as a “philosophical thinker, a humanist”. Wagner is the shadow in the background of three late pieces, including a premonition of Wagner’s death in Venice (The Funeral Gondola) and the anguished music Liszt wrote when premonition became fact. The mighty Sonata in B minor provides a cathartic conclusion to an intense and emotional program.
