“One of the finest new experimental-rock acts out of Sydney” The Music
Internationally acclaimed Sydney quintet Tangents perform spontaneous compositions drawing on their rich and diverse musical backgrounds.
Instruments and instrumentalists change roles on the spin of a die: cello locks in as bass with the drums, then switches to melodic impressionism alongside the piano; the Rhodes produces spooky drones or basslines, or vibes, Rhodes and piano are somehow played simultaneously. Live drumming evokes endlessly chopped breakbeats, guitar produces textural drones or angular punkish jabs, and just when you think you've got it all pegged, shuddering pulsations and sub-bass rumbles emerge from the laptop.
The musicians' intuitive understanding of each other's playing allows contemplative beauty between smaller cells to be juxtaposed with edge of the seat full-band energy bursts. No performance is the same, and none is ever less than exhilarating.
This performance is part of Unashamedly Original, a two-day festival of multidisciplinary performances that push the envelope of sight and sound, Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July.
