Simon Trpceski in Recital

Experience Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade in a rarely heard version for solo piano.

On his most recent visit to Sydney, Simon Trpčeski proved yet again that he’s a pianist with “virtuosity to burn” (The Australian) and that he’s a musician who can impress equally with brilliant virtuosity and exquisitely sensitive playing. In his first recital for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra he begins at the lyrical end of the spectrum with Grieg’s suite of dances “in olden style”, composed as a tribute to Ludvig Holberg, the Molière of the North, and a selection of Mendelssohn’s beautiful miniatures in which the piano takes flight and “sings”. This is elegant and appealing music. Then Trpčeski makes an audacious gesture: throwing down the gauntlet to orchestras everywhere with a transcription for solo piano of Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade. Can two hands and one Steinway match the sensuous and exotic colours of the original? Come find out!
