“A musical journey made in heaven” The Courier-Mail
Part play, part concert, Piano Lessons tells the story of Anna Goldsworthy’s metamorphosis from gawky nine-year-old schoolgirl to concert pianist under the passionate tutelage of Russian émigré Eleanora Sivan. This adaptation of her award-winning memoir brings Anna Goldsworthy to the stage to play herself, performing sublime piano pieces by Mozart, Liszt and Chopin. As the charismatic teacher inspires and challenges Anna, we learn what it takes to be a virtuoso; physically, psychologically and emotionally.
Anna is at once brutally honest, self-deprecating and funny and Mrs Sivan’s wisdom is not confined to music; these are also lessons in life.
Directed by Michael Futcher and with a stand-out performance by Helen Howard as Mrs Sivan, this critically acclaimed production gives a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of a professional musician.
