English pianist Imogen Cooper returns to Sydney with a recital program of Beethoven, Haydn and a modern take on a Renaissance hit.
Imogen Cooper has always chosen to focus on the composers and works she truly loves – the Classical and early Romantic masters. Her most recent SSO recital, in 2009, was an all-Schubert program; for concertos she’s chosen Mozart. Sydney has also heard her play Schumann and Brahms. But this insightful musician is also a champion of living composers such as Thomas Adès, and in her 2017 recital she’ll play his Darknesse Visible – an “explosion” of John Dowland’s lute song “In Darknesse Let Me Dwell”. Setting off the moody Renaissance inspiration is the Classical sensibility of Haydn and early Beethoven. And the program ends with one of Beethoven’s last sonatas, the remarkable Op.110 – powerful in its introspection and embracing nearly every feeling from good humour to sarcasm, from despair to triumph.
