By day, artist, creative director and visual strategist Dan Goods runs The Studio at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he and his team develop creative ways of communicating to transform complex concepts into meaningful stories that can be universally understood. After hours, he works on creative projects with collaborators around the world.
Goods has a background in graphic design and graduated valedictorian from Art Center College of Design in 2002. He soon realised he could channel his talents into scientific fields and joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab to create installations about discovering planets around other stars, and formed a team of inspiring creatives. His art project The Big Playground offers viewers an opportunity to see the universe through a hole drilled into a grain of sand. Metamorphosis lets you experience the atmosphere of a comet and the ways they behave.
In 2006, Goods was honoured with an International Design Excellence Award for his eCloud data-driven sculpture at San Jose Airport. This dynamic sculpture is inspired by the volume and behavior of an idealized cloud. Made from unique polycarbonate tiles that can fade between transparent and opaque states, its patterns are transformed periodically by real-time weather from around the world.
He is currently collaborating on new public art pieces in California and is developing the Museum of Awe with David Delgado and Ivan Amato. The Museum of Awe combines art, science, theatre and surprise to create experiences where people are reminded of the gift and privilege of being alive.
Recently, Goods was named as “one of the most interesting people in Los Angeles”. Find out what he is dreaming up for his next projects, where collaborations are evolving and how you can be involved.
