Evening Salon

Sydney Symphony Orchestra

Evening Salon

Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey joins the musicians of the SSO for an evening of Haydn and Mozart.

Haydn knew how to win friends. His three ‘Times of Day’ symphonies were written to show his orchestral colleagues at their very best, his D major cello concerto was a virtuoso vehicle for his friend Anton Kraft, and when it came to pleasing audiences he had perfect pitch. His music in this concert embodies the Classical spirit: cheerful and urbane. Even the ‘Tempest’ that concludes his Evening Symphony is a polite and fleeting downpour! Strictly speaking, Mozart’s wind serenade K388 would have functioned as party music for balmy summer nights. But it fails spectacularly as wallpaper music: its dramatic atmosphere is simply too compelling to ignore.
