Described as "the finest choral singing [...] ever heard in Australia" (Limelight Magazine), Brisbane-based choir The Australian Voices join Sydney’s ‘chamber music all-stars’ Omega Ensemble in a concert framed by two of the best-loved settings of the mass for the dead, exploring mourning and mercy.

Fauré wrote his Requiem in 1888 for the death his mother, depicting death ‘as a happy deliverance, a longing for the happiness of the beyond, rather than a painful experience.’ Compared to Fauré’s work of deep but simple consolation, Mozart’s Requiem, here given in a new chamber arrangement by Australian composer and conductor Gordon Hamilton, is naturally more operatic, encompassing fear of hell-fire with the ultimate hope for peace. Fauré is also represented by his strikingly mature and lyrical student work, setting the great tragedian Racine’s version of a medieval hymn to the Son of God.

Mozart also celebrates Christ in his beloved setting of the Eucharistic hymn Ave verum corpus, composed shortly before his own death in 1791. The concert also features Benjamin Britten’s extended meditation on the parable of the Good Samaritan, composed in 1963 for the Centenary of the Red Cross.
