Mozart in the city

Mozart and the French connection

Thu 22 Feb 7pm

François Leleux, one of the great oboists of our time, returns to Sydney to play and conduct a wind serenade by Mozart surrounded by exquisite French music. There’s Fauré’s lyrical music for Pelléas et Mélisande, Bizet’s exuberant Symphony in C, and a new arrangement of Debussy’s saxophone rhapsody will display Leleux’s sublime cor anglais playing.

mozart and mendelssohn

Thu 5 Apr 7pm

Two of music’s most famous prodigies – Mozart and Mendelssohn – are the stars in this sublime program alongside the enchanting and atmospheric introduction to Strauss’s opera Capriccio. Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto exploits every side of the bassoon’s personality: virtuosity, humour and mellow eloquence, and Mendelssohn’s popular Italian Symphony is vibrant music, brimming with charm.

mozart and the piano

Thu 24 May 7pm

Australian pianist Daniel de Borah joins the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to play Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21. Its rapturous slow movement is framed by music that’s rich and energetic and absolutely captivating. It’s paired with a sunny and graceful serenade for string orchestra by Josef Suk, composed when he was a student of Dvořák.

mozart's fantastic flute

Thu 12 Jul 7pm

SSO Associate Principal Flute Emma Sholl is the star in Mozart’s delightful G major flute concerto. The concerto is framed by a Mozart-inspired overture from Schubert and Mozart’s high-spirited Linz Symphony No.36 which was famously composed in just four days!

INTERNATIONAL PIANISTS IN RECITAL

Yulianna Avdeeva in Recital

Mon 14 May 7pm

Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva made her name when she won the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2010, and in her Australian debut recital she’s chosen a program that embraces every side of Chopin’s genius. In the second half she turns to Liszt, and his mighty Sonata in B minor is a cathartic conclusion to the program.

Simon Trpceski in Recital

Mon 2 Jul 7pm

Simon Trpčeski’s first SSO recital showcases his lyricism and his daring. Grieg’s Holberg Suite, and a selection of Mendelssohn’s beautiful Songs without Words will highlight his exquisitely sensitive playing. Then, in and audacious gesture he performs a piano transcription of Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade.

Steven Osborne in Recital

Mon 6 Aug 7pm

Scottish pianist Steven Osborne makes a striking juxtaposition between the fragrant, exotic sonorities of Debussy and the propulsive vigour of Prokofiev. Debussy Images and Estampes conjure vivid impressions of their subjects, while Prokofiev’s War Sonatas flit between savage bravura and haunting melodies, whimsical waltzes and dreamy tranquillity.

Benjamin Grosvenor in Recital

Mon 17 Sep 7pm

Rising star Benjamin Grosvenor returns to Sydney with an elegant and evocative piano recital. Bach and Mozart will demonstrate Grosvenor’s clarity and crisp articulation, and his lyricism will come to the fore in music by Debussy and Granados. The recital ends with Ravel’s famously virtuosic Gaspard de la Nuit.
