Robin Clare’s work riffs on the colour, rhythm and repetition of the music culture of her native island, Jamaica. Inspired by the movements of Ska, Reggae and Dancehall and the aesthetics of Jamaican party promotions my portfolio is a clash of hand-drawn typography, bold large-scale paintings, illustration and hand-drawn animation. She references dance moves, risqué party names and provocative imagery surrounding the culture, combined with pop art, comic book, cinematic and advertising influences. Through her paintings she strives to reflect a society that is imaginative, inventive, colourful and never shy of a little controversy.
Robin Clare is exhibiting at the City Recital Hall as part of the second Exhibition Project of 2019.
