Level 1 / 4.30pm - 5.30pm

Composers are often inspired by images, whether it be nature, the visual arts, or particularly vivid imaginations. This program contains three visually-inspired works, drawing on plants, angels, and the seasons (through the eyes of Cy Twombly), and shows how programmatic elements can help give context to audiences’ understanding of new music.

Alex Waite

Artist Bio

At the age of eight, Alexander (Alex) Waite had his heart set on being an electronic keyboard player, but was reluctantly convinced to learn the piano by his first teacher. After playing for a year, he quit the instrument, only to regain his passion at the start of high school and hasn’t looked back since!

Alex is a passionate chamber musician, and has collaborated with such artists as Silvia Carredu, Peter Hill and Steve Davislim. He has a particular interest in contemporary music, and is the pianist of the ELISION ensemble. Alex has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician on ABC Classic and the MBS network, and has performed in Europe, Asia, the USA and around Australia. Festivals include Shanghai New Music Week, the Metropolis New Music Festival, Melbourne Festival, BIFEM, and a residency at the Center for 21st Century Music in Buffalo, New York. Alex has worked with composers including Liza Lim, Unsuk Chin and Aaron Cassidy.

Moving from Gippsland to Sydney after finishing school, Alex completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with First Class Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium. In 2016, he relocated to Melbourne to study with Timothy Young at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), where he completed three years of the Professional Performance Program. Aside from Timothy, mentors include Dr Paul Rickard-Ford and Judy Hall OAM.
