Joshua Redman to perform at the Sydney Festival with pianist Brad Mehldau

"HE had a famous jazz saxophonist dad and a dancer mother, but Joshua Redman came so very close to running away to the bar. And not the kind the 42-year-old plies his musical wares in now.
After a degree at Harvard University, Redman was on his way to study law at Yale when he decided to take a year off to play music in New York. Like his father Dewey Redman, the youngster had taken up the saxophone and taken to jazz in a big way.
"Things kind of took off for me, so I never looked back," he recalls. "My mum was totally cool; she was happy when she found out I was going to pursue music and my dad, I'm sure, was cool deep down but he said, 'Are you crazy? Go to law school!' " " Click here to read more.
