Creative collusion is dream come true
"THIS was a typically distinctive and imaginative collaboration devised by Roland Peelman and the shadow puppeteer Stephen Mushin, and executed by Mushin and the Song Company, whose capacity for innovative cross-collaboration with other art forms sets it apart from other Sydney musical groups, large and small.
While the singers performed a series of works loosely drawing on dream themes, Mushin masterminded a series of evocative shadow plays on seven small oval-shaped screens the size of mirrors and laid out like thought bubbles at the back of the stage, with the action moving from one screen to the other as though journeying between worlds. The delicacy of Mushin's cut-out creations, back projected to create perspective and fine detail, created fragility and tenderness, like the narrative of children's picture books.
Performed almost completely in darkness (except for occasional sharp lights from the projectors, which pierced the eye as though one were at the optometrist), the performance evoked a sense of stylised strangeness that invited inner exploration of dream-states."
