Radiant voice to wring your heart

"OPERA audiences in Sydney this week may be forgiven for thinking: Griselda who? Antonio Vivaldi is well known, of course, for his quartet of violin concertos, The Four Seasons. Less known are the dozens of operas he composed, several of which are coming back into circulation, including Griselda from 1735.

The story of "patient Griselda", from The Decameron, was a popular subject for composers of the baroque period: the tale of a woman's dignity and fortitude in the face of endless humiliations.

It's being done by pop-up company Pinchgut Opera, which once a year restores to magnificence little-known or rarely performed works. Indeed, Griselda is Pinchgut's second Vivaldi in 10 years, after the company staged Juditha Triumphans in 2007. This year's outing brings together some familiar faces from the Pinchgut family and some newcomers, including mezzosoprano Caitlin Hulcup in the title role."
