Marking the final stage of a four-year cycle based on the elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire, The Song Company celebrates the heat and passion of Fire and the music that expresses it. In his first collaboration with The Song Company, Danish Guest Director and composer Bo Holten leads a fiery program of neck-breaking speeds, hair-raising leaps and awe-inspiring harmonies. From Spain to Australia, from the Renaissance to today, Vocal Fireworks will have you on the edge of your seat.
Let Richard Gill be your guide as he unpacks the Haydn Variations, which takes a hymn tune as its starting point and uses one of Brahms' favourite strategies – variation form – to build something utterly magnificent.
Mozart composed a double concerto for flute and harp for the Comte de Guines – a favourite of Marie Antoinette and a fine flautist. With its poetic, serene second movement and glorious shades of colour from the rarely heard period harp, this rarely performed piece has become a truly beloved Mozart work. Then get ready for Mozart’s last symphony. The mythological name Jupiter symbolises the classical deity and virtues of strength and wisdom. It is a triumphant and exciting masterpiece, and the final coda of the Jupiter Symphony is a miracle! Something very special indeed to celebrate the 25th year of the Brandenburg.
Australia’s ARIA Award-winning a cappella quartet, The Idea of North, joins forces with Sydney Chamber Choir to explore the music of Icelandic pop princess, Bjørk. Drawing upon the rich vein of folk and a cappella singing, they perform a series of specially commissioned arrangements of the music of Bjørk as well as music from other Icelandic artists.
